The Tarrazu region is the only place in Costa Rica where coffee production is actually growing. Around 19,000 pickers come to the area during harvest time, of which 10,000 will pick for the Co-op. The Co-op provides nurseries agronomy support, training, and a whole host of services. Coffee pulp is converted into organic fertilizer, coffees trees are given to farmers to maintain crop health, and power for the offices is generated from solar panels. The Co-Op also owns businesses such as gas stations , supermarkets, and veterinary clinics which generate profits to the cooperative members at the end of the year.
Because we are such huge fans of what the co-op is doing, we reached out to learn more about what ways we could make a positive impact on their daily life. While the Co-op itself has been in business for over 60 years, their infrastructure when it came to childcare for the workers was one sector that needed a little bit more love. That's why VMCT stepped up and made a donation to help them meet that goal. By having a childcare facility on site that provides education, meals four times a day, plus dancing and painting, working families can have peace of mind knowing that their children are in excellent care.
